April is known as the Month of the Young Child and, although as Children’s Librarians we focus on young children every day, April has special meaning to us. Children’s Librarians, in partnership with early childhood educators and museum educators across the state of Pennsylvania, will be on a mission to share one very special book with every young child we meet.
So your child had a visit from the local CLP Children’s Specialist. What does that mean?
The 20th Annual Summit Against Racism brought together over 600 people from various backgrounds, with the mission of eliminating racism. From the workshops that we did attend, and the one that we presented, the knowledge and insight provided has been immense.
There are a number of things parents and caregivers can do to support the development of their child’s early literacy skills. Among them are five simple practices: singing, talking, reading, writing, and playing.
At the beginning of October, my colleague Michael and I began presenting Sensory Discoveries storytime at CLP – Squirrel Hill. Sensory Discoveries is a program designed for children with autism and other sensory processing disorders, as well as peers of all abilities. It is a warm and welcoming space where children and their caregivers can gather to share stories, songs and hands-on activities.
I don’t always pick the traditional scary monster books for Halloween storytimes. This year, I’m pairing up two picture books about being fearless and problem solving.
Play is widely acknowledged as the true work of a child, but how can we honor that in our busy lives?
It’s never too early to start reading to your baby, and we hope that the Best Books for Babies booklist in combination with future Baby Book Showers will continue to inspire caregivers to share books with their babies.

In Pittsburgh, we have so many great places for kids: the parks, the Children’s Museum, the Science Center and the libraries (of course) among others, so there’s always something great to do for young people here in “Kidsburgh.” You may have noticed that this week has been ESPECIALLY packed full of cool stuff for kids. That’s because we are smack-dab in the middle of Remake Learning Days!
