Throwback Thursday: Like a Brick to the Head?

Scott Brick is a super-prolific audiobook narrator and a favorite among Main library staff. He’s narrated books by just about everyone – people like Steve Berry, Terry Brooks, Harlan Coben, Philip K. Dick, John Grisham, Frank Herbert, Jon Krakauer, Erik Larson, and Brad Meltzer, to name a few (really, that’s the short list).

Science Fiction & Fantasy by Women of Color

I read a lot of Science Fiction and Fantasy. Seriously, A LOT. Growing up, I cut my teeth on Anne McCaffery’s Dragonriders of Pern series and Marion Zimmer Bradley’s The Mists of Avalon. Later, it was The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. Sadly, many people still think Science Fiction and Fantasy novels are written mostly by white anglo-saxon men for white anglo-saxon men (think J. R. R. Tolkein or George R. R. Martin). However, there are a number of fantastic female authors of color rocking both genres today.

American Gods

We may be a few years past the 10th anniversary release of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods, but with the STARZ television adaptation around the corner I thought it would be good to revisit one of my favorite Gaiman novels.

Teens at a team table at a Battle of the Books reading competition.

Books, Glory, Awesomeness… How A YA Trivia Contest Reignited This Librarian’s Reading Fire

For those not in the know, Battle of the Books is like pub trivia without the booze, that instead focuses on a specific book list for each participating grade level, all while bringing TONS of teens from all over the city and county together in their love of reading (and the thrill of competition!). One of my favorite parts about this program is the collaboration that goes into suggesting book titles to make the final cut, which happens across the Library and even beyond Teen Services (teamwork makes the dream work!). And if you’re anything like me, you get to experience a new genre/author/writing style than what you might normally pick out for yourself to read.

Memoirs You Should Listen To

Curl up with a good audio book this winter! These memoirs are read by the author for an added level of greatness.

Three Audio Books with Great Narrators

There have been numerous discussions about whether listening to books is the same as reading books. Although the process may be different, it seems to me that either way you are learning and gathering information. The following are audio book titles that I would recommend, because the narrators are amazing and really give life to the characters.

Welcome to Jupiter

Do you find yourself constantly pondering about the universe and all the secrets it holds? I did, but now that I’ve read a few books on theoretical physics, I’m light years beyond where I was before. In celebration of NASA’s Juno mission, let’s go to “Infinity and Beyond.”
