As the cold weather has set in, I’ve been hunkering down and watching some DVDs from the library. I’ve been on a real Marvel super hero kick lately, and I have been enjoying myself greatly.
Somehow, the 2015 film Ant-Man had escaped me. I caught a small bit on TV but really wanted to see the whole film, uninterrupted. There was a particular moment in the film that was brilliant, and led me down another path as well.
At one point Ant-Man is ant-sized, and battling Yellowjacket inside of a briefcase that is falling through the air. During their fight Yellowjacket shouts (in perfect super villain form, I might add) “I will disintegrate you!” At that point, the iPhone in the briefcase comes on and says “Playing The Cure, Disintegration” and the opening strains of the first track on that album, ‘Plainsong,’ burst out. To say I was delighted is an understatement.
I’ve been listening to that album since it was released in May of 1989. During the summer of 1989 that album was on repeat in my tape deck. I have listened to it steadily ever since and I love it. This weird, unexpected scene in a superhero movie made me revisit that album, and I am happy to report that it still stands up. I had always thought of that album as a summer record (yes, I’m one of those weirdos who associate albums with seasons), but over the last few years I have come to associate it with, and love it during the winter.
If you’re looking to hunker down and stay warm, maybe do it by revisiting some music from almost 30 years ago, and some super hero movies.
