Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Plans Major Hours Expansion
The increase, one of the largest in CLP history, will expand hours at neighborhood locations starting March 10th.
Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh announced that, beginning Sunday, March 10th, it will begin a major hours expansion, adding 93 more hours of service per week across its system. The increase, one of the largest in the Library’s history, will improve access and engagement for families, working adults, students, and patrons with busy schedules.
Evening hours have been extended, with most branches remaining open until 8 pm at least three nights a week. Five branches, CLP – Allegheny, CLP – Brookline, CLP- East Liberty, CLP – Main in Oakland and CLP – Squirrel Hill, will be open until 8 pm four evenings a week. Hours for CLP – Downtown, Library of Accessible Media for Pennsylvanians (LAMP) and the Allegheny County Law Library are unchanged. A full schedule can be found below and on the Library website carnegielibrary.org.
“It’s our responsibility to listen and respond to our community by providing core services that are needed and accessible to residents,” said Andrew Medlar, President and Director of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. “Thanks to increased annual funding from the Regional Asset District we can provide patrons with even greater access to lots of books, unique programming, dynamic spaces, and services provided by our amazing staff.”
The expanded hours are a direct response to thousands of community members who contributed their hopes, dreams and ideas during a year-long strategic planning process. Inspired by the community, the Library’s new 2024-2028 strategic plan focuses on community connections, responsive services, regional cooperation and organizational excellence.
“During our Strategic Planning process, people told us they love their library, but want more of it,” Mr. Medlar added. “We heard the need and desire for the Library to be responsive with additional hours, especially being open in the evenings We heard the need for the Library to be more connected with programming that represents the entire community. And, we heard the need for the Library to be more cooperative by working with other mission-aligned community organizations to support each other’s’ work. We’re committed to keeping this conversation going so CLP continues to be a place that fosters literacy, enables exploration and creates connections.”
Throughout March, CLP locations will celebrate their extended hours with Open Houses. The community is invited to drop in for prize raffles, family activities and refreshments.
