Start Your Own Book Club

As fall lingers around the corner, many of us look forward to getting back in the swing of our routines with school, work and other responsibilities. While you may be reflecting on the many great stories read as part of your summer reading lists and goals, autumn offers the perfect season to convene at a book club that offers a collective literary experience. If the Library or other book club offerings around town lack the experience you’re looking for, however, forming your own book club can be a fun and engaging way to try new titles and meet other local readers. While you’ll want to determine details like where to host the book club and who to invite, the following tools offer great help in putting the event together:

NoveList Plus
Available through your CLP card, NoveList offers a useful database for locating similar titles and authors based on different reading selections. Patrons can find read-alike titles based on their favorite books as well as discover titles based on different descriptors, such as tone and setting. Extras include book discussion guides and a book-to-movie bibliography. Start here for ideas on what to read at your book club!

LitLovers
Described as “a well-read online community,” this site was founded by a Pittsburgh college English instructor to help share her love of literature and book discussions. LitLovers offers thousands of reading guides to provide ideas for discussion questions as well as other helpful features including an article on how to get started with forming your own group. Visit here to look for discussion question ideas!

Invite the Author from GalleyCat
This article provides a listing of authors available for attending book discussion groups, either in person or through video conferencing. Authors in the directory cover a variety of genres and topics and add great supplemental content to any book club!
