Gallery Talk: The Fashion Group of Pittsburgh

September 21 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Photograph shows suffrage and labor activist Flora Dodge "Fola" La Follette (1882-1970), social reformer and missionary Rose Livingston, and a young striker during a garment strike in New York City in 1913

CLP’s Special Collections Department houses a collection on historical fashion and costuming, including books on cultural dress, high-fashion styles, and military uniforms from the 18th and 19th centuries. The book plates read “Purchased Using Funds Donated by the Fashion Group of Pittsburgh.” How did the Steel City become the fashion capital of Appalachia? Why were Hatter’s Tea Parties all the rage in the 1950s? Join us as we dive into the history of the Fashion Group, its connections to Pittsburgh, and the frills and flounces of historical dress. This program takes place in the South Wing Reading Room and includes a tour highlighting some of the items on exhibit.
