Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Main Library Reopens

Normal operations resume Thursday, September 21st

Pittsburgh, PA  –   –

On Sunday, September 17, 2023 at approximately 10:20 am a small fire was detected in a lower-level mechanical room at Carnegie Library’s Main campus in Oakland. The fire was quickly extinguished by Pittsburgh Fire and was contained to an isolated area. The building is safe and structurally sound, but portions of the Library’s internal systems, including the HVAC, IT network and public access elevator were affected.

Approximately 30 patrons and staff were in the building at the time of the incident and were safely evacuated. No injuries were reported and none of the Library’s collections sustained damage. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Areas of the building may remain closed or limited to the public to allow crews to clean and make repairs to the affected systems. We thank everyone for their patience and understanding as we work to reestablish library services at this location.
