Pick Five

Illustration of people of various ages surrounding large books with text reading "Summer Reading" and "Staff Picks"

This year’s Summer Reading at the Library is simple. We want everyone—especially kids and teens—to read five books.

Reading can be a fun way to pass the time. It’s also a great way to learn new things. And reading (at least) five books over the summer helps students to build and maintain their skills.

Once you’ve committed to reading five, the next question is, what five? Some folks like to read facts (like history, biography and how-to books), others prefer fiction (mystery, fantasy, sci-fi anyone?).

Some readers love to read books with pictures, like graphic novels and other illustrated books. (Did you know there are even wordless books? And yes, reading them counts too.) Others don’t want to be distracted by images.

Here’s one kind of silly way to pick your five books: find books with “five” in the title, like the books below. Or look up books that feature your favorite number and see what you find.

Happy Summer Reading!
