Summer Is Coming

Last week, when it was rainy and gray for the umpteenth day in a row, I started to doubt the inevitable changing of the seasons. But this week it’s warmer, I can see blue sky, and a quick calendar check tells me Memorial Day is just around the corner.

That means summer really is coming! Here are some things I always look forward to as summer approaches:

  • The Three Rivers Arts Festival is back on this year in a hybrid format. Described by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust as “the region’s largest multidisciplinary showcase of visual art and performing arts,” there is always something for everyone at this outdoors festival, even if it’s just a nice long walk with lots to look at after a pandemic’s worth of time staying inside.

If you are still hesitant about being out with the crowds, the festival is again offering a virtual Artist Market that will feature over 350 independent artists. The festival will run June 4-13 from 12-8 PM each day.

  • Picnics! Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kick-off day for summer foods, and I can’t wait! Fresh tomato and mozzarella salad, everything grilled, lemonade and fruit pies are just a few of my favorites.

America’s Test Kitchen has a book stuffed full of recipes that will help you find a new summer favorite: “The Complete Summer Cookbook: Beat the Heat With 500 Recipes That Make the Most of Summer’s Bounty.”

To quench your summer thirst, pair lemons with all sorts of flavors like raspberry, vanilla, honey or even cardamom with the help of “Lemonade With Zest: 40 Thirst-Quenching Recipes.” And don’t forget dessert! “Annie Rigg’s Summer Berries & Autumn Fruits: 120 Sensational Sweet & Savory Recipes provides seasonal recipes for citrus, berries, stone, tropical and orchard fruits. And it may be the tastiest way to transition into the following season.

And finally, my library degree may be taken away from me if I don’t extoll the joys of Summer Reading. Whether reading on a beach, in the mountains or relaxing in your own sunny space, Summer Reading is so much fun!

This year, the Library is encouraging all kids and teens to “Read Five.” That’s because reading just five books over summer vacation helps students return to school ready to learn. To find some great reads, check out these booklists for kids and teens.

Adults are encouraged to “Read Five” too. You may enjoy a book on the lighter side. A novel of suspense can get your heart pounding. Or, delve into some historical nonfiction to gain perspective on the present.

Taking time to read shows your children that it’s a worthwhile way to spend their time. So this summer commit to exploring new territories, finding comfort in beloved genres or reading along with your kids.

Summer Reading at the Library runs from June 1-August 31, and is for all ages. You can preregister for Summer Reading now!
