Patience Is a Virtue—and a Very Useful Skill

Logo shows the words, "For Kids" in bold text surrounded by stars.

In the best of times, it’s hard to wait. That’s especially true when you are waiting for something you want. Whether it’s a tasty treat or a longed-for experience (hugs, anyone?), it can be challenging to find ways to spend time productively until you finally get what you want.

Exercising patience is something that most of us have had to do over the past year. With luck, we are getting a little bit better at it. If we’re really lucky, we’ll soon be able to stop practicing patience and enjoy the activities we’ve been anticipating.

For kids, though, it doesn’t take a pandemic to require that they develop their patience. Every day—every minute practically—offers some “opportunity” to wait for something or someone.

Sharing a book, or encouraging your child to page through a story on their own, is a great way to pass the time. As a bonus, these titles focus on being patient and illustrate the old adage “Good things come to (s)he who waits.”
