If you read “Ready Player One,” you know it’s a sci-fi treasure hunt brimming with nerdy nostalgia. Author Ernest Cline has delivered again in the sequel, “Ready Player Two.” (If you haven’t read the first book yet, be warned that there is a mild spoiler ahead.)
Several years after Wade won the contest left behind by the eccentric James Halliday, a new device has made the virtual world of the OASIS more appealing than ever. Not all is well, however. Despite the efforts of Wade and his friends, the real world is still ravaged by poverty and climate disaster.
In the midst of these challenges, as well as some personal problems, Wade discovers that another Easter Egg is waiting to be found in the OASIS. The prize is a mystery, but the clues are as intriguing as ever.
Like the first book, this is a high-stakes adventure full of 70s, 80s and 90s nostalgia. I feared it might feel like a repeat of the first book, but it managed to avoid that fate though it does hold on to many of the things that made the setting and characters great.
I’ll confess, though, that I didn’t like it quite as much overall. It felt more focused on a few individual parts of the OASIS, at the expense of the larger picture. I wanted more fun diversions from the main plot.
Even so, I found it to be an enjoyable follow-up. I also appreciated the chance to learn more about some characters who weren’t deeply explored in book one.
