Shadow and Bone is the first book in the Grisha Triology by Leigh Bardugo. Orphaned refugees Alina and Mal have relied on each other since they were small children thrown together in an orphanage, and little has changed since entering the ranks of the first army. Alina is still the sickly girl following around the strong, charismatic Mal. The friends have been assigned the task of traveling through the fold, a dense fog created hundreds of years ago by a power hungry Darkling, to the port city to retrieve supplies and finish their training. But in the fold Alina’s worst nightmare comes true when monsters attack their regiment. It is during this frantic fight that she finds a long dormant power within herself that saves her and Mal but also marks her as a weapon to be fought over. 

With a definite Russian Fairy tale feel to it the Grisha trilogy features three full length novels about the main characters as well as several novellas and a second series of novels set in the world author Leigh Bardugo has created. ( Part fantasy, part romance, and part political thriller Shadow and Bone most importantly follows the story of a person who feels alone looking to find a place to call home.
