Another entry in my continuing adventures with Book Riot’s 2016 Read Harder Challenge…

When I started this thing, I wondered what category I’d have to fudge the rules on in order to get it checked off. I finally found it: Read a book that was adapted into a movie, then watch the movie. Debate which is better. Not only did I see the adaptation first, but it was a TV mini-series.

Agatha Christie’s And Then There Were None is one of the world’s best-selling mysteries for good reason. Ten strangers have been invited to spend time at an island estate — some with a job offer, others to spend a holiday weekend. The guests find that their rooms all have the poem “Ten Little Indians” posted near the door and that there are ten figurines on the dining room table. After dinner the first night, a recording plays … each guest, along with the butler and housekeeper, is accused of being responsible in the death of another person. Then, one by one, each guest is killed in a fashion described by the poem. The story is intricate and kept me guessing until the very end.

The mini-series aired on TV back in March and stars Charles Dance, Miranda Richardson and Sam Neill. While there are some deviations (aren’t there always?), it’s fun, dark and captures the twisted spirit of the novel. I had it in the back of my mind when I selected it for the June book club at Woods Run, and I really enjoyed reading it (and comparing it to the adaptation).
