This coming of age story introduces us to Kenya, a black girl growing up in Philadelphia in the 1980s and 1990s. As Kenya matures, she navigates majority black schools, where her family's Afrocentric and sometimes militant political viewpoints make her an oddball and the target of teasing. Later, as one of only two black girls in her class at a private school, she finds herself outcast again. Kenya turns to her parents and the communities she feels estranged from as she grows into herself. Released during Black History Month, Asali Somolon's debut novel is a sensitive reminder that Black History is not monolithic - it is personal, individual and communal.
