Old, New, Borrowed Blues… : A Black History Month Reading Series

Friday, February 22, 2013
7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Old – From the Mississippi Delta by Endesha Ida Mae Holland, includes Q&A with Director & Cast

Directed by Karla Payne, demaskus Affiliate Artist

The journey begins in Greenwood, Mississippi—the Delta. “In my Delta town, some black girls aspired to become the woman—the mistress of some wealthy white man. But the darker ones—like me—could make it by going to the cotton fields, working from sun to sun, for just about three dollars a day,” laments Phelia (Holland’s alter-ego). It is those and other dreadful experiences that inspire her to dream far beyond the funny-paper walls in her drafty shotgun house in Dixie Lane Alley. From prostitute to Ph.D. we follow Phelia’s journey through this play inspired by Alice Walker’s poem “Revolutionary Petunias,” which closes with an emotional tribute to unsung black “sheroes”—extraordinary, ordinary women who are the backbone of the African-American community.

February 22-24, 2013 demaskus theater collective will celebrate Black History Month with readings from historical plays and a revue! This series will be held at Carnegie Library branches throughout the city of Pittsburgh and will feature readings from classic literature by African-American authors, playwrights and a blues revue celebrating African American Culture.

There are few institutions more complex than the institution of marriage. Ancient plays presented “holy matrimony” as a sacred mystery. The mystery, complexity, beauty and inseparable nature of the relationship make it the perfect metaphor for the history of Africans in America and the seemingly fragmented history that has been born of that union. However, through the readings of plays that are old, new, borrowed (from a Greek classic) and through and the singing of songs that are full of the blues, demaskus will pay homage to the voices of the past and highlight the humanity of a culture that should forever celebrate its present and hopeful future.

All the plays include adult content and language. 16+
