"Touch and Feel Book"

2009 Summer Reading Manual

What you need:
  • various kinds of paper
  • textured and patterned fabric (velvet, cotton, burlap, taffeta, corduroy, etc.)
  • pictures from old magazines or clip art
  • feathers
  • buttons
  • ribbon/string
  • glue
  • hole punch
  • stapler

What to do:
  1. Use a variety of whiter or colored papers for the inside pages of the book.
  2. Use two pieces of construction paper or cardstock for the covers.
  3. Child/adult writes the child's name and traces the child's hand on the cover of the book.
  4. Fill the inside pages with pictures or items to personalize the book.
    1. The adult/child can draw pictures of things they do together.
    2. Find pictures from the magazines to describe things the child likes.
    3. Glue different fabrics on pages and label them.
    4. Make pictures with the buttons.
  5. After assembling all the pages, bind the book with either ribbon, or staple the pages


Allow the children to paint with either watercolors or tempra paints with paintbrushes or sponges or their fingers or tree branches. Allow the children to be creative with their art work.


"Five Little Paintbrushes"

(Presenter may want to make five paintbrushes. One brush with colored white, another colored red, another colored green, another colored black, and the last one colored yellow. Connect all five with a paper fastener, in the following order - yellow, black, green red, and white.)

Five little brushes went out to paint.
(fan out all the paintbrushes)

One painted white, then ran away in fright.
(push the white paintbrush behind the red paintbrush)

The second painted red and jumped under the bed.
(push the red and white brushes behind the green)

The third painted green then fled the scene.
(push the green and other two brushes behind the black)

The fourth painted black then ran around in back.
(hide the black and the other brushes behind the yellow)

The fifth painted yellow and felt so mellow,
He invited everyone back to begin again.
(fan out all the paintbrushes)
