BLAST Early Learning Parent Spotlight:
Physical Health

An environment that encourages exploration and physical development is important for children of all ages. Be sure to allow your children at least one hour a day of moderate intensity or vigorous intensity physical play; to secure beneficial effects to the aspects of their health.

  • Brisk walking
  • Playing tag
  • Jumping rope
  • Swimming
  • Set a positive example by leading an active lifestyle yourself. Make physical activity part of your family's daily routine such as designating time for family walks or playing active games together.
  • Give your children active toys and equipment, and take them to places where they can be active; such as the local playground.
  • Offer your children positive reinforcement for the physical activities in which you child participates and encourage them as they express interest in new activities.
  • Help your child participate in many activities that are right for his or her age and interest.
  • Let our children see how much fun you can have while being active. Don't just run with them, run like a lion or a bear. Walk like a gorilla or monkey. Hop like a kangaroo.
  • Make chores a family affair. Who can pull the most weeds out of the vegetable garden? Who can collect the most litter in the neighborhood? Have your kids help scoop the snow off the driveway and use it to make a snow man.
  • Incorporate activity into daily routines, such as taking the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • Keep it fun, so you can count on your child to come back for more.
