Thriller Sound Tracks
Dead Zone
COMPACT DISC Mo Kam 6256
Maybe you know Michael Kamen from his orchestral with Pink Floyd, Metallica and Queensryche? Okay, maybe not. Michael Kamen went from being an arranger for rock groups to composing scores for numerous Hollywood action films. In between, he created this unsettling soundtrack for a David Cronenberg film. It contains classic horror music ingredients: high-pitched strings, low brass, and timpani rumbles. The film stars the always intense yet subdued Christopher Walken. Really, a silent film of that guy balancing his checkbook would be creepy enough.

Great Hitchcock Movie Thrillers
COMPACT DISC Mo Her 24497
Perhaps listening to the music from Psycho will inspire you to scare your spouse in the shower while wielding a banana instead of a knife like Chevy Chase did in National Lampoon's Vacation. Bernard Herrmann's all-strings soundtrack is followed here by four other orchestral pieces from Hitchcock movies including Vertigo.

Halloween
COMPACT DISC Mo Car 25674
John Carpenter composed and performed (with help from Dan Wyman) the all synthesizer accompaniment to his own movie. Perhaps that's why the soundtrack is such an integral part of the film. The liner notes are also done by Carpenter and explain his influences and methods. A local heavy metal guitarist has the Halloween theme as his ringtone. What greater endorsement do you need?

Hollywood Nightmares
COMPACT DISC Mo Hol 5927
Who better to play scary movie soundtracks than the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra? Though it is hard to imagine an eerie atmosphere at an outdoor concert at the Hollywood Bowl under blue skies and the California sun. Anyway, with music from 1913 to 1993, this CD runs the gamut from early film composers such as Max Steiner and Franz Waxman up to contemporary legend John Williams.

The Hunger
COMPACT DISC Mo Rub 1179
Half of this soundtrack is excerpts of pieces by Bach, Delibes, and Schubert which aren't at all frightening but rather lull the listener into short-lived contentment. The rest of the soundtrack, composed by Michael Rubini and Denny Jaeger, contains such tracks as "Beach House" which sounds like a goth-rock group floating off into deepest, darkest space and "The Final Death" which sounds like an orchestra murdering an elephant. In other words, highly recommended.

Music from Alfred Hitchcock Films
COMPACT DISC Mo Hit 1052
The pairing of possibly the greatest film composer, Bernard Herrmann, and the greatest director, Hitchcock, is one of the greatest triumphs of 20th century Hollywood. This CD, however, features the other composers in the orchestral idiom with whom Hitchcock worked. Have no fear as they're no slouches: John Williams, Franz Waxman, Dimitri Tiomkin, and Roy Webb.

The Omen
COMPACT DISC Mo Gol 19081
Jerry Goldsmith is one of Hollywood's most venerated film composers yet his only Academy Award was for The Omen. Many folks rank it even above Herrmann's Psycho as the scariest soundtrack ever made especially with its "satanic" choir chants.

Psycho: Great Hitchcock Movie Thrillers
COMPACT DISC Mo Her 19089
The first five tracks of this CD features Bernard Herrmann conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra performing some of his greatest works for film. Miklos Rozsa's Oscar-winning theme from Spellbound is included though it's more grand and romantic than unnerving. The CD concludes with Charles Gounod's "Funeral March Of a Marionette" which you are most likely to recognize as the theme to the "Alfred Hitchcock Presents" TV show.

Suspiria
COMPACT DISC Mo Gob 27022
While the classical tradition served Hermann, Williams, et al, well, Italian 1970's progressive rock also can provide a fine soundtrack to a horror flick. Goblin still is influential today as can be heard in the music of Pittsburgh's own Zombi. As the music is weaving its mesmeric spell upon you, though, try not to giggle too much at the misspellings and grammatical errors in the CD's liner notes.
