Pittsburgh Jazz

  • African American Jazz Preservation Society of Pittsburgh (AAJPSP)
    The African American Jazz Preservation Society of Pittsburgh (AAJPSP) is an outgrowth of the realization that a great deal of the rich cultural contributions made in the field of jazz originated from musicians who were born, raised, are living or have lived in Pittsburgh. Its goal is to preserve and disseminate the history of jazz in Pittsburgh.
  • Jazz Workshop, Inc
    A nonprofit organization established in 1973 by accomplished musician and social worker Harold Young, Sr. that provides free jazz music lessons to more than 200 inner city children and adults yearly.
  • Manchester Craftsmen's Guild (MCG) Jazz
    Committed to the preservation, presentation and promotion of jazz through its 350 seat concert hall, a record label, and educational programs.
  • Pittsburgh Jazz Channel
    Pittsburgh Jazz Channel, from PubMusic, plays traditional mainstream jazz, with a mix of classic and newer artists.
  • Pittsburgh JazzLive International Festival
    Started in 2011, Pittsburgh JazzLive offers a jazz-filled weekend at the beginning of June.
  • Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra
    The Pittsburgh Jazz Orchestra, founded by Nathan Davis and directed by Sean Jones, is the resident orchestra of the August Wilson Center for African American Culture.
  • Pittsburgh Jazz Society
    A non-profit organization, founded in 1987 which promotes jazz, encourages jazz scholarship and holds periodic meetings where jazz may be performed for members and the general public.
  • Westmoreland Jazz Society
    The WJS meets at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art on the third Thursday of the month from September through June for a jazz performance. During its season, the WJS presents many of the finest and most respected jazz musicians of the region.

    This is the website to go with Ken Burns' ten-part epic series which aired on PBS beginning January 8, 2001.
  • Smithsonian Jazz
    This website by the National Museum of American History in Washington D.C. offers a "This Day in Jazz History" for jazz trivia lovers, a bibliography of jazz books for children, and information about Jazz Appreciation Month (April).
  • Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz
    Located in Washington DC, the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz offers public school-based jazz education programs for young people around the world. Check their website for education resources.
