Both George and Frederick Toerge were born in Darmstadt, Southern Germany, arriving first in New York City in 1854, and then in Pittsburgh with their family. George Toerge was conductor of The Germania Orchestra. Fred Toerge was conductor of the Alvin Theater Orchestra
