"American Experience" tells the story Vivien Thomas, an African American initially hired as a janitor at Vanderbilt University's medical school, and his relationship with Alfred Blalock, a white surgeon. Blalock soon recognized Thomas’ intellect and the two men became colleagues and collaborators in the lab and the operating room. Thomas fought prejudice, racism and segregation to eventually become a trainer of surgeons and a major force in the advancement of African Americans in medicine. Presented by PBS.
