Saturday, February 2, 2013
| Other Dates
3:00 PM
- 5:00 PM
Marcus Rediker, Distinguished Professor of Atlantic History at the University of Pittsburgh, will be speaking about his new book, The Amistad Rebellion: An Atlantic Odyssey of Slavery and Freedom. The book offers a new approach to the famous Amistad revolt of 1839, in which 53 captive Africans threw off their chains, captured their slave ship and ultimately won a long legal battle and the right to return to their native land in Sierra Leone. This handful of self-emancipated Africans opened a way for millions to follow. Rediker is the author of several prize-winning books, including The Slave Ship: A Human History. Book signing to follow.
