First Books in High Fantasy Sagas
High fantasy sagas generally take place in fantastical worlds filled with swords and sorcery and epic struggles. They also usually span thousands of pages across numerous books. Here are the first books in some of the better known high fantasy sagas.
Pawn of Prophecy
Pawn of Prophecy begins the five book series known as The Belgariad. It is the story of warring gods and sorcerers in an ancient world torn between good and evil.
Gardens of the Moon
The introductory book to a big ten volume series called The Malazan Book of the Fallen, Gardens of the Moon takes you to the world of Malazan and its warring military factions.
Wizard's First Rule
The first of eleven books in The Sword of Truth series, Wizard's First Rule introduces the saga's hero, Richard Cypher. Cypher is a seemingly average man who actually possesses great power and knowledge that must be used to thwart the machinations of a rising evil.
The Eye of the World
The beginning of a massive series (eleven books with a twelfth on the way) known as The Wheel of Time. The Eye of the World is the story of a group of young friends who become immersed in the great fate of their world.
Arrows of the Queen
The first book of a trilogy called The Heralds of Valdemar, Arrows of the Queen introduces the girl Talia, a warrior-in-training who gets mixed up in a royal conspiracy.
A Game of Thrones
A Game of Thrones welcomes you to the series A Song of Ice and Fire and the world of Westeros, where royal families are at war to determine who will sit on the Iron Throne and become king (or queen). A four book series with a fifth in the works.
The Fellowship of the Ring
The first of three books in what is arguably the most famous high fantasy saga ever written, The Lord of the Rings.
