Uncovering "Hidden" Histories of Jews and Muslims in Medieval and Modern Europe
Thursday, June 27, 2013
The fascinating story of the hiding of the Sarajevo Haggadah and the saving of Jews by a Muslim in Sarajevo during the Second World War, a story recently popularized by Geraldine Brooks in her novel People of the Book, will be used as a point of departure for broader discussion of the lesser known intersection of the histories of Jews and Muslims in medieval Spain and modern Europe before 1948. Such discussion also aims to reconsider the nature of Muslim-Jewish interactions and question the more common narratives of intractable conflict or idealized coexistence this topic has tended to elicit.
